Eating Healthy Made Easy

As a future dietitian I here people say all the time that it is hard to eat healthy or I don’t have time! Well boooo! It can be really simple and easy with just a few changes.

Plan a head: this can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. I usually only plan for dinner because we eat leftovers for lunch (and sometimes breakfast) and the hubs usually eats the same thing for breakfast everyday (cereal and eggs).

  • Think about the days you will eat at home. This week we have a wedding, rehearsal dinner, and I work one night so I have to plan for really only 3 or 4 meals.
  • Google some new healthy and easy recipes so you won’t get bored
  • Make a list: what you plan to eat and the ingredients you need to make it. Check to see if you already have some of the ingredients in the pantry.
Going to the grocery store: Remember coupons if you have any!! I forget these often unfortunately! Look at the unit price to see which is the best deal don’t just buy your favorite brand. Also, make sure to read the labels to get the best ingredients (no high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, etc)

Prep day: So on the days that we go grocery shopping which is usually Sundays I pick some ingredients to make a head. For instance, this week I made hummus, black beans, and a kale stir fry (recipe to come). This way I could make some quick sandwiches or wraps. This will also help keep you kitchen cleaner (who doesn’t love that)!

You can even completely prep almost all your recipes and then keep them in the fridge or freezer. That way when dinner comes you just pop it in the microwave or fridge and wa la! There are some blogs that make a whole month of freezer meals in one day. Skinny Taste gives some great examples on how to make some of your favorite dishes freezer ready.

Remembering that eating healthy makes us feel better and reduces the chance of chronic diseases always makes it easy for me to eat healthy! Hang in there it gets easier!
