This weeks topic… Eating Clean

Every other day there is a new fad diet. People lose weight and gain it back and then some. Which can actually do more harm than good. The key to being on a diet is not dieting at all! Say what? Diets don’t work. I feel like if you look at our society you can tell that diets don’t work. So what is one to do?

They key to eating is having a healthy balance and eating clean. What does eating clean mean? Eating healthy whole foods: fruits, vegetables, beans/legumes, whole grains, meats, low fat dairy products, and healthy fats. Just as I said before don’t tell yourself you can’t eat certain foods, because no foods are off limits. The important thing to do is try to eat clean the majority of the time! Try to eat foods in their most natural foods. You will become healthier, have more energy, and feel a lot better from eating this way!   Here are some tips to eating clean…

10 Tips for Eating Clean

1. Ditch the soda and drink water! Not only will your waist line thank you but also you will save tons of money!

2. Prep your meals on the weekend for the week. That way you don’t have an excuse that you didn’t have time!

3. Pack your lunch so you are less likely to want to go out to eat.

4. Plan your weekly or biweekly menu and grocery list. You will know exactly what you are making and what you need to purchase so you take the guess work out of it. Or make your meals in bulk and freeze them!

5. Add fresh fruits to cereal or veggies to eggs to increase your fruit and vegetable intake. Sneak in your fruits and veggies!

6. Choose whole grains over refined “white” grains. Make sure it says 100% whole wheat

7. Eat a lot less sugar. Sweeten things naturally using dates and other dried fruits, even really ripe bananas. Also, limit the amount of fake sugars.

8. Find new healthy ways to make your favorite foods. You can make pizza healthy by adding tons of veggies, using a whole wheat crust, and adding less cheese!

9. Sometimes it’s easier to just eliminate your comfort foods or unhealthy foods from your kitchen that can tempt you. I try to keep ice cream out of my freezer or else I would eat all of it in one sitting… No joke! Literally have barely any will power.

10. Keep things simple… The less ingredients the better! If you can’t pronounce it you shouldn’t eat it.

The most important thing is to stick with it. You can’t change everything in one night and you will fall off the band wagon a few times, but don’t give up! You would be amazed on how your taste buds change and that you will start to crave healthier foods! I used to love love love cheese. After not eating it for a while my taste buds adapted and I stopped craving it. I didn’t need to top my food with cheese anymore. I could taste how the food really tasted without it smothered in cheese and it was still delicious! You did need that extra junk or what I like to call fake food. Because a lot of it isn’t even real food its food like product! Try to eat healthy as best you can and feel good about it! You will love how you feel!

  1. Purple smoothies and marinara are how I get my kids to eat better. They know what’s going into them both and don’t mind at all. My almost 4 year old boy is always asking me to put his greens in his smoothies. We also don’t use processed sugar in anything anymore. To sweeten we use dates, maple sugar or coconut sugar.

    1. Thats awesome! I love to tell people for kids and even adults to start hiding fruits and vegetables into foods! Its a great way to make them eat healthy without them even knowing!

  2. I just found your blog through a link from Jonathan 🙂 I love what you’re doing here! My family has been slowly cleaning up our food act, and the thing that has helped us most has been cutting out processed junk. Lisa over at 100daysofrealfood.com has a huge database of clean eating recipes that we love. We have a limited budget and live in an area where organic food is extremely scarce in the stores. Her recipes have been a lifesaver.

    1. Thanks Sarah! I have heard of her and definitely have to check it out because we try to eat organic too on a tight budget! Its hard to do but definitely possible! So glad to hear your family is taking steps toward health! Hope you to see you back here!

  3. We’ve been in a quest to eat better for a few months… Love your tips here! I like preparing ahead of time so there’s no excuse for eating good food! Found you through Homemaker on a Dime’s link party – I’m going to follow you for more great tips!

    Have a great week!

    1. Thanks Danielle! I agree with you! I’m not always perfect with it but preparing ahead gives me less of an excuse! Thanks for following!

  4. Hi! Isn’t eating clean great! I am currently restarting my family of 5 on the clean eating path. I did it a few years ago and lost 20 lbs, but then I started eating junk again, quit smoking (Hurray) and gained it all back. In the attempt to loose the weight I am back on the clean eating train and my family is along for the ride. I must say that it feels like I am spending most of my time in the kitchen, but I’m enjoying it. My husband is a champ and is right on board with me. My children on the other hand, not so much. I am trying to purchase less and less processed foods but sometimes I just can’t. Do you have any tips on clean eating with kids?

    Thanks!

    ~Sarah

    1. I personally don’t have kids myself but I do know is that kids can take about 10 times of being exposed to a new food before excepting it! Stick with it eventually they may come around and their taste buds should change. Also, don’t make separate meals for you and your husband and then the kids. I’m so happy your husband is on board (that can sometimes be the hardest part)! Keep it up and if you have any more questions feel free to email me! Sorry it took so long for me to respond your comment got marked as spam!!!

  5. I’m trying to eat a lot better in 2014. Since I sit at a desk all day I’ve gained a few extra pounds from bad decisions. I like packing my lunch lately. I decide what is in it and how much of something I can have. this post if very informative. Thanks for sharing!
