Extend the Life of Your Mascara
I feel like mascara never lasts long around my house. It’s probably because I use a ton of it. Seriously, very rarely will you see me leave the house without it. Confession: I even wear it to work out… Yeah, I’m that person. The last time I got mascara, I opened it and it was already pretty darn dry. Ugh… super annoying! Can’t really complain, though, because I get my makeup for free from my mom. Love her!
Well, today, I want to share a simple trick to make your mascara last longer! I will even give you two different ways… Whoa.
- Aloe Vera
Simply add 1 or 2 (or more if needed) pea-sized squirts of aloe vera in the dry mascara tube and mix well. Done! - Contact Solution/Saline Solution
Add around 10 drops or more and mix! Done. Bam.
Can’t get much easier than that! Plus, you will save some money since you now don’t have to run out and buy mascara every time it starts to dry out!
*Always use caution when putting anything near your eye!
I party here…
Great tip! I want to try it! I did an experiment once with putting mascara in hot water to get more out and it worked: http://purposelyfrugal.com/2012/01/12/wasting-less-make-up/#.UVulkPHEv9Q
But I bet this idea works a lot better!
Wow! Thanks for sharing! I had no idea it was that simple 🙂 I always feel like I am buying mascara…Thanks for the tip!
Great tip! Thanks for sharing it! My liquid eyeliner is running low…I wonder if saline solution would work for that too.
Good to know! It does seem like they always go dry and clumpy quickly. I don’t use a lot, but like you, I never leave the house without at least a touch of mascara, even if I don’t have time for other makeup.
I’m visiting through Whimsy Wednesday.
Hi! Found you on Whimsey Wed blog hop. Love this! Thanks for sharing. Now following you via FB.
Thanks for a great tip! I’m a pretty frugal person, so I’m definitely going to use this.
Wow–great ideas!!
This is a great idea! I’m definitely going to try it. I have some tubes laying around that I can mess with.

That has saved me a lot of money!
Wow! I’ve never heard of this trick and am looking forward to trying it out! Thank you, Amy!
Can I just use saline solution that I make or do you have to buy the contact lenses saline? I didn’t have the store bought and read that you can immerse the mascara (make sure it is tightly shut) into water that has boiled for 3 minutes. I moved it off the heat and let it set in water for 2 minutes. It worked for now. I’d like to try the saline.
Awesome tip! Thanks so much!
Do you use this with your new homemade mascara recipe? You mentioned it doesn’t last forever, so I wondered if you have experience with it drying out before it goes bad, in which case I wonder which of these tricks works best for the DIY version. Thanks!
I just bought a bottle of aloe vera at the store today for this, but all I could find were aloe vera gels that had some other ingredients too, is that what you use?
You can try the aloe vera from mountainroseherb.com. It has very few other ingredients. I had some of the same issues when looking at the store
