This post contains a lot of TMI. Just a warning. Women’s issues here, folks. Okay, so this is how I got started making this hormone balancing blend.

After August was born, I had some hormonal issues, but brushed them off as nothing. I had really bad postpartum hair loss, for reals (check out this post where I share a picture). Since I was breastfeeding, my period didn’t return until she was about 13 months old. It was no biggie. I was expecting much, much worse from the stories I’ve heard. That next month, though… I started having really heavy bleeding, and the feeling that my uterus was going to fall out. Seriously, the pain was up there with child birth, except there wasn’t anything to be excited about at the end. It was pain without a purpose. Of course, my hubby was going to be out of town the next time my period arrived, and I couldn’t handle another period where I was doubled over in pain. How does one take care of a toddler when their uterus is about to fall out? So, I started doing research and asking my natural minded friends and came up with this essential oil blend that has done wonders.

Since starting this blend, I have had no cramps. Well, I should say, I was using it in an oil and rubbing it on my stomach, and I started having a few cramps (nothing close to the pain experience before), so then I added the blend to my diffuser, and they disappeared. Poof! Gone! Some may say it’s just the placebo effect, but how does one placebo away crippling pain?

My Favorite Essential Oils For Hormone Balance & Menstrual Pain

My favorite blend for hormone balance include: clary sagefrankincense, geranium, marjoram, and lavender.

Clary sage is a great oil for hormone balancing. It has also been shown to greatly reduce pain (source). It is not safe during pregnancy, as it can cause contractions. It has also been shown to have anti-depressant like effects and helps improve thyroid levels (source).

Frankincense is used for many things. It is an anti-inflammatory and is also believed to help balance estrogen production and reduce menstrual pain. Although, I could not find any published studies on this.

Lavender helps with a multitude of issues: it helps relax muscles, relieve headaches (source), balance hormones, and just smells really pretty (very scientific). It has also been shown to relieve pain and depression symptoms (source).

Geranium is believed to help regulate hormone balance and provide relief from PMS symptoms.

Marjoram helps relieve menstrual pain and regulates periods.

A study done using lavender, clary sage, and marjoram showed a significant reduction in menstrual pain using these oils compared to the placebo (source). Another study using clary sage, marjoram, geranium, ginger, and cinnamon showed significant reduction in menstrual pain (source)

This blend is not safe during pregnancy. Always consult with a physician or healthcare professional before using essential oils. This post has not been evaluated by the FDA and is not intended to replace.

Hormone Balancing Oil

You can make an oil blend of 2 drops each of clary sage, frankincense, marjoram, geranium, and lavender in 2 Tbs of carrier oil of choice, and apply topically to your stomach a few times per day. You can also diffuse them, or you can add them to Magnesium oil spray (see below).

Homemade Hormone Balancing Spray

I also made this into a spray by adding 3 drops each of Clary sage, frankincense, marjoram, and lavender in magnesium oil spray. Apply it onto your stomach 3 times per day if not using the oil. If I’m also using the hormone balancing oil I would use the magnesium oil spray 1-2 times per day and the hormone balancing oil 1 time per day.

You can make magnesium oil spray by boiling 1/2 cup of distilled water and adding it to 1/2 cup magnesium flakes (like this kind) and stirring until dissolved. Allow to cool and add 3 drops each of Clary sage, frankincense, marjoram, and lavender.

Diffusing

Follow your diffuser instructions (I have this one). Sometimes I will add one drop each of frankincense, lavender, clary sage, marjoram, and geranium. Sometimes I will just use 2 drops frankincense, 2 drops clary sage, and 2 drops lavender with the same effect.

Also, just an FYI. I’m not here to sell you essential oils, nor do I sell a certain brand specifically (I’ve used several different brands with great success). But rather, I’m here to tell you what has worked for me. Typically, I use Plant Therapy because of the excellent quality and price. I also use Doterra and sometimes Aura Cacia. But, of course, I would only recommend products I would actually use myself.
