I love lip balm! Especially when I make it! I get to control what goes into it and the quality of the ingredients! Here is the perfect recipe for honey lip balm that will nourish your lips and have some of the benefits of pure local honey!

Honey Lip Balm
approx 15 lip balm tubes
1 oz bees wax (about 2 tbsp)
1 oz shea butter ( about 2 tbsp)
1/2 oz coconut oil (about 1 tbsp)
1/2 oz almond oil (about 1 tbsp)
1/4 oz local honey (about 1/2 tbsp)
few drops of vitamin e (optional)
essential oils (optional) I used sweet orange

Directions: In a double boiler or very small sauce crockpot melt bees wax slowly. Add shea butter and wait a few minutes until it melts. Add coconut oil and almond oil,  stir until melted and combined. Add honey and whisk well (it can be difficult to mix the honey throughout the oil wax mixture.) I actually stirred it between eat pour too. Add essential oil if preferred. Place in tins or empty lip balm tubes and let cool on the counter. I know it might be hard but wait until completely cooled! Enjoy!

This recipe is pretty easy! With holidays right around the corner these will make awesome gifts! Happy crafting

  1. I used this recipe as a starting point. I have found the shea butter “blooms” or turns very grainy if it not tempered (like chocolate). So I used cocoa butter instead. I didn’t have almond oil so used coconut oil in place of it along with the coconut oil listed so it equaled 1 oz. This just might be my new favorite lipbalm! I used equal parts beeswax, coconut oil, and cocoa butter. It smells like chocolate coconut without any un-natural ingredients and feels amazing on my lips!

  2. My shea butter that I bought was chalky on top too so that might be it too. Change the oils around and try other oils. There are so many great oils to use. : )

  3. Hi,
I have made this recipe several times and every time a few days after I made it the lip balms start getting this white stuff growing on it. I don’t know if it’s mold..but it doesn’t look right! I tried putting more vitamin e but it didn’t work. Any ideas? Is there anything else I could use to preserve it in addition to the vitamin e?

    1. That is odd and has never happened to me! You could add some essential oil that helps prevent bacteria growth, like lavender. Have you sterilized your containers prior to filling them? It could also be little chunks of coconut oil floating to the top

    2. Yes, I had sterilized the containers and added essential oils. It happens after it hardens and has sat for a few days so don’t think it’s coconut oil floating up to the top since it’s all set already. It is weird. I don’t know what to do I love making it but what if it’s mold..that’s gross! I live in a humid, warm environment..maybe it just grows mold fast like everything else. Do you have any natural preservative suggestions? Thanks!

    3. I think it is the Shea butter, it can be temperamental I found the way to stop it happening is holding it over a low heat for a little longer ( about 20 mins.) and stirring plenty before you pour. This stops it going grainy.

    4. I forgot to add that is perfectly harmless it just doesn’t look very nice! It is called blooming.
I always transfer mine straight to the fridge to set as well.

    5. Oh good to know thanks! Do you know if using cocoa butter or something similar would help with that problem?

    6. Might want to try keeping them in the refrigerator??? And the vitamin E should preserve too along with essential oils.

  4. This is a great recipe-I did not have honey on hand but did have some maple syrup-the smell was absolutely amazing!! Thanks Amy-
