Natural stick deodorant

I love my original homemade deodorant and have been using it for years. Although my old recipe worked well for applying with the hands I didn’t like using it in stick form. I felt like it didn’t go on well and I couldn’t get enough of it on for it to work as well. I thought it would be fun to make a stick deodorant that went on really well, works, and is moisturizing. So with some research and tweaking I came up with this…

Homemade Natural Stick Deodorant

Ingredients:

1 1/2 Tbs coconut oil
1 Tbs shea butter
1 heaping Tbs beeswax
2 Tbs cornstarch or arrowroot powder
2 Tbs baking soda
10 drops essential oil ( I use tea tree, lavender, or lemon for their anti-bacterial properties)
Few drops of vitamin e (optional)

Directions: In a small pot or sauce crock pot melt coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax. Once melted mix in baking soda and cornstarch really well. Turn off heat and stir in essential oils. Pour into an empty clean deodorant container. Let cool. I put mine in the freezer so that it would cool quickly and decrease the chance of the baking soda and cornstarch from settling. That’s it!

This stuff goes on really smooth and my armpits feel so moisturized without feeling overly greasy and it goes on clear! To me if feels more like commercial deodorant, but I can feel better about not putting on tons of chemicals and aluminum. Better for the environment and myself! Yay!

FYI If your just switching over from the commercial products your body may go through a 1-2 week transition period where this deodorant may not seem to be working as well as you might think. But once your body gets used to it it will work wonders! So don’t give up your body will thank you!

  1. I love this stuff! I’ve been using the regular coconut oil/baking soda/arrowroot (apply with hand) for quite a while. This is less of a hassle and has worked just as good (actually I think it’s better).. Thanks!

  2. Do you have any suggestions for making a large batch of this? Gonna have a make and take party with several friends and wondering how to measure it out once it’s in the pot and ready to go I’m the deodorant container.. Suggestions??

    1. You can just multiply the recipe by however many you need. Just make sure to stir before placing in watch tube!

    2. Is a watch tube the deodorant tube? How much goes in each container? Or do I just fill it up? I’m worried about it not being evenly dispersed..

    3. Hahah sorry I was typing fast! Yes, the deodorant tube. Every container is different size. I would throughly mix the “deodorant batter” before pouring into each tube. That way it’s evenly dispersed.

  3. Hi Amy! I ran accross your blog from pinterest! I love it! So i noticed you make alot of your own stuff! As do I. Well I want to intoroduce to Young Living Essential Oils! They are the leader in essential oils because they ARE PURE. When I say 100% pure I want to explain something. Every health food store sells essential oils as do the internet like amazon.com. Well in order for them to call them natural and pure they only need 3 small drops of the actual pure oil in that bottle. The rest is synthetic chemicles. I know you must be shocked! When I found out about the truth of adultered oils i was pretty upset. But then my friend introduced me to young living essential oils! YL strives provide the best most purest healthy safe oils for over 20yrs now. YL Oils are Medical Grade. Grade A. What that means is they have the power to heal illness. *Not FDA approved although (no natural way of healing will ever be FDA approved due to $ and thats the sad truth) I have thousands of testimonies about how ppl are being healed and blessed by these oils. Gary Young owner of Young Living calls the oils “gods medicine” because thats exactualy what they are. What ever comes from the root, tree, shrub, flower is the only thing in that bottle of essential oil. I cannot express how important that is. Please visit seedtoseal.com for more info on that. So YL became the company it is because of the demand of the product 20yrs ago. It just started as a Co-Op. Gary has been researching for over 30years, he travels all over the world to find new plant life to make oils from. It would take 50 cups of Peppermint Tea to equal 1 drop of Young Livings Peppermint Oil. So Young Living owns thier own farms, distileries and Labs. They have full control over the product to ensure we get the best of the best product. YL is an open door company. Meaning as a member of the company like myself members have the ability to go visit any of the farms or diltileries all aorund the world. Work the farm and take part in harvest. All of it. Young Living has no secrets! They love to show us how they make the product and get it to us!

Amy I would love to send you an intro info packet and some samples. I live in San Diego and if you live near id love to go for coffee to have to see and experience my oils first hand. So you let me know if you would like that. I am telling you this in the truest form, These oils will change your life!

Please visit my website! Im am working on it more and will be blogging soon.
I have pics i wanted to share of myself at the Lavender Farm and Distillery but I was unable to post here.

  4. Good info.

Another tip – Lavilin underarm cream. You only need to use it once a week (best to do it at night after you shower). It’s all-natural and very effective.

  5. Also, thanks for the tip about the alum salt crystals. I love the salt deoderants, but need something to absorb moisture. If I can add the salt to the deo, that might just be the answer I’m looking for. Arrowroot, Clay etc don’t do much for me with odor. I’ve tried all kinds of essential oils including Tea Tree. What works best for me is actually Thieves (Young Living) I’m off to find alum crystals. THANKS!

  6. This looks awesome, thanks for sharing it with us! I’m allergic to a lot of chemicals used in health & beauty products, I made a beeswax/honey/olive oil moisturiser last year which was lovely, especially as a lip balm but I’ve never tried making a deodorant with it.

  7. For those of you bothered by baking soda, try substituting arrowroot or cornstarch. I just made my first batch of homemade deodorant tonight (got my recipe from a different blog as I hadn’t seen this one until now) and used verbena essential oil for fragrance. It smells divine and I can’t wait to try it. I like that you said your recipe doesn’t crumble when it’s applied so I may have to this one next! Thanks for a wonderful website!

  8. I am a personal trainer trying to get my clients on a toxic free lifestyle! I loved ur description of ur blog and would love to continue to get ur insights if u have a mailing list, or notifications when u post something new. Our bodies are a gift from God and we need to be good stewards of this gift!

  9. Byproduct of bacteria is the smell or body odor. Putting an antibacterial, tea oil, in the arm pits is the logical thing. To do that I used to put a tiny, tiny bit on my fingertips and rub it in my pits while I was still a bit wet after a shower. The dampness after the shower is enough to allow the tea oil to spread around enough without less likelihood of causing a reaction.

  10. I just made it thank you! I used a mason jar and placed it inside a boiling pot of water then just lifted it out and mixed. I will use the mason jar for this again..no ruining any pots or pans…Thank you
