Kaia loves these treats….. Isn’t she cute and just look at those crazy eyes, gotta love them!
By the way we found out that Kaia is HEART WORM FREE finally WOOOO HOOO!

Just in case you didn’t know I love my little Kaia. We don’t have kids yet, so she is my baby right now.  My friends would tell you I love animals to the extreme (I’m a little crazy).  And you may know I am in graduate school to become a Registered Dietitian. So this means I am kind of a food freak and really care about nutrition, even for Kaia. That means we only give her good holistic dog food without any added by products or ingredients I wouldn’t eat myself. Since I am still in school we are on a tight budget, so Kaia a lot of times goes without treats or just gets fruits and veggies as treats. Side note: dogs love carrots.

A good way to make sure the treats are healthy and to save money is by making treats yourself. My friend shared this recipe from A Kitchen Muse with me and Kaia loved them! This would also be a great gift idea for a dog lover in your life!

Ingredients
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. In a stand mixer, mix together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon
  3. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff.
  4. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces or use cookie cutter
  5. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.

Than place in an adorable mason jar like this!

  1. I like large dogs. We have 2 – a 90lb and a mid-sized 45lb. I looked at the Nutro link and it seems they only do small dogs. I would very much appreciate a recommendation for larger dogs if you wouldn’t mind – please? 🙂

    1. Hmmm. We use Nutro which my husky loves!!! But the last bag my husband bought was for large breeds so they should have options for your big “kids”. If you can’t find that though we used to feed Kaia Wellness when she was a puppy but it is kinda pricey, AvoDerm I also liked, and another brand I heard was good was blue buffalo. If you want to look into it more you can check out some of these brands that they sell at Petco! Hope that helps!

  2. Hi, there! I made these last night with my girls for our dogs. It was fun and our doggies really like them!

  3. Wow…I understand the love of your “fur baby” as they are your own…I’m going to take a stab at these!!! We have a little yorkie (picture on my blog)…and he loves anything we give him (especially if it’s human ;)…so, I’m sure he would LOVE this…thanks for the recipe…I’m now a follower…love your site!!!

  4. Thanks for the recipe! I just found some mini doggie cookie cutters, but was postponing buying them (for lack of a recipe). Now I think I’ll buy them & try this for our Yorkie. I am now your newest follower. Have a blessed day

  5. Amy the dough looks fantastic, must be all the pumpkin to make it smooth! I think we’ll use our easter cookie cutters and make these puppy treats for easter baskets this year.
Thanks for the great recipe and another pantry staple reminder- canned pumpkin! 😉
    Hi Kaia!!

  6. I love this! We don’t have a dog yet, but hope to get one soon. I have been a little nervous about all the dog food/dog treats out there because of the questionable content. I will be pinning this 🙂

    1. Thanks Heather! Yea I don’t blame you! You really have to do research and look at the packaging! Then some of the brands can get really expensive. We went with Nutro Natural Choice because it seemed to have wholesome ingredients and added vitamins and minerals! Plus it was the best price for the natural stuff and Kaia loves it. Hope this will come in handy when you get a little doggy :)!
