Homemade Face Wash: Natural Herbal Recipe

Homemade face wash combines simple, natural ingredients to make a gentle and effective recipe. This natural honey cleanser is the perfect recipe for a beginner wanting to start making their own natural products.

I’m always on quest to create natural products that are non-toxic and safer for the environment. So many people believe natural skin care is expensive, and it can be if you purchase it from a company.

But there are so many ways to create simple recipes at home. This facial cleanser is one way.

Truth be told, I’m in love with this homemade makeup remover. This is what I use most of the time. But once or twice a week, I like to use this natural DIY face cleanser to get my skin extra clean.

I love that it cleans your skin without being too drying (so it great for dry skin). The oil and honey help hydrate the skin, while the lavender water soothes the skin.

This recipe was originally created for this free Natural Skin Mini Guide, but decided to share it here. It was too good not to share, ya know? You can still head over and grab that guide – did I mention it’s totally free?

I love the simplicity of this recipe. Natural, simple, and easy. Basically my motto in life. I ain’t got time to be messing around with fussy stuff. My two kids wouldn’t have that by any means.

Plus, this face wash is super customizable for your skin needs. See below all my tips and possible swaps below.

Homemade Face Wash Recipe Highlights:

Great for sensitive skin: With soothing ingredients

Anti-inflammatory: If you deal with skin irritation, this gentle cleanser has anti-inflammatory ingredients like lavender, honey and oil to help soothe inflamed skin.

Moisturizing: You don’t want to strip skin of its natural oils, and thankfully this gentle facial cleanser doesn’t.

Easy: Making your own face wash is actually really simple to make and only take a few minutes.

Tips:

  • Use essential oils that are good for your skin, like frankincense, lavender, ylang ylang and more.
  • You can use this everyday, or switch it up and use the oil cleansing method.
  • Use distilled water to help deter bacteria growth. Since this recipe is boiled, you technically can just use tap water.
  • Switch out the dried lavender flowers for dried rose petals or chamomile flowers.
  • If this ratio of soap to water is too drying for you, add more water.
  • I like to use a foaming soap dispenser to make it last longer and turn this into a foaming cleanser.

Ingredients:

Liquid castile soap: this is an all natural vegetable-derived soap that is ultra concentrated

Lavender water: You could definitely just use regular water, but I love infusing the water with herbs to get more benefits from it. You could also swap out lavender water and use hydrosol instead.

Honey: Naturally has an antibacterial property to it, and it can also be hydrating to the skin. Try to choose raw honey for the most benefits.

Oil: I like to use avocado oil, jojoba, olive oil, or sweet almond oil. Use whichever one works best for your skin. See below which oil will work best for your skin type.

Essential oils: Adding EO to skincare recipes can be really beneficial. Some essential oils can help fight oily skin (ylang ylang), while others can help acne-prone skin (melaleuca aka tea tree oil).

What Carrier Oil Should I Use?

Oil- pick an oil that works for your skin.

  • Olive oil: Contains oleocanthal, which can help reduce irritation and calm inflamed skin.
  • Avocado oil: Rich in fatty acids (I.e. Oleic acid), vitamin E and other nutrients. Great for moisturizer.
  • Argan oil  It contains many vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids, including Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and omega-6 fatty acids. These vitamins and fatty acids work together to replenish, nourish, and help protect the skin from free-radicals, UV damage, and other elements.
  • Apricot oil: (I use this one) Rich in vitamins A and E, which can help reduce signs of aging. It also contains gamma linoleic acid, which tones and firms skin. It is very moisturizing, oil that is great for your skin and does a wonderful job soothing dry skin.
  • Jojoba oil is probably my favorite oil. Not only is it moisturizing, but it can soothe dry skin, reduce redness and inflammation, and help repair skin. It is closest to the skin’s natural sebum.
  • Fractionated coconut oil – Great if you have more acne prone skin as it is moisturizing while being naturally antibacterial and antifungal. You will need to use fractionated coconut oil in this recipe or else the oil may solidify and get chunky.

How To Make DIY Face Wash:

In a small saucepan, add water and dried lavender. Bring to a simmer and keep it on the heat until it is reduced to half. Set aside to cool. You could also substitute the lavender water for rose water.

In small glass container, add in honey, oil, and Castile soap.

Strain lavender water into a container and pour the water into bottle with other ingredients.

Add essential oils.

To use:

  1. Dampen face with warm water.
  2. Add a small amount of the natural face cleanser to your hands and rub hands together to start forming a lather.
  3. Rub over face in circular motions for about a minute.
  4. Rinse with warm water. Follow up with DIY toner and apply moisturizer.

For my night time skincare routine, I really like to double cleanse. First I use an oil cleanser (oil cleansing method), then follow up with this homemade facial cleanser. This makes sure my skin is nice and clean, removes all of my makeup without drying out my skin.

Writing that out makes washing your face seem way more complicated than it is. Truly, it’s just a wash, spritz, moisturize, and go! I hope you enjoy this simple herbal face wash.
