You know when you just have one of those days when you are running around like a crazy person and don’t have time to sit down for a good meal.

That was me the other day. I had to go grocery shopping in the morning (with two kids, mind you), come home, make lunch, paint something in the living room, scrape wallpaper glue off the bedroom wall, and work on a few blog projects.

Doesn’t that make you tired just reading it?

I NEEDED a pick-me-up. Something full of healthy ingredients that would keep me full and energize me as I checked everything off my to-do list.

This tropical oatmeal smoothie did just that. I love that it includes just about every food group, a serving (or two) of veggies and fruit, and healthy fats.

Plus, it tastes absolutely amazing – like a tropical drink you’d have on a warm, sunny beach. It reminds me of my favorite Pina colada smoothie, but this one is packed with veggies and oatmeal!

Tips For Making This Tropical Oatmeal Smoothies:

  • The beautiful green color comes from fresh kale. You could swap out kale with fresh spinach, or even frozen spinach, but only use 1/4-1/2 cup of frozen spinach.
  • Add more protein by adding a scoop or two of collagen peptides. You could also use a vanilla protein powder, but keep in mind that will change the flavor a bit.
  • If you have a hard time digesting oats, you could soak them overnight and cook them before adding them to the smoothie.
  • While you could use fresh fruit in this recipe, I love using frozen fruit. It is so much easier than having to chop up fruit, and I don’t like adding ice to my smoothies (manly because we never have ice in our house). It just makes smoothie-making way easier.

Tools you may need:

Measuring cups and spoons

Blender – I have this non-fancy blender that works great. I love that the blender jar is glass and not plastic so I can make soups in it too without having to worry about the plastic leaving into our food.

Silicon spatula

Oatmeal Smoothie FAQ:

Is oatmeal good in a smoothie?

Yes! It blends down, so you don’t even notice it is there. It also adds fiber and thickness to the smoothie, helping you stay fuller, longer.

I love adding oats to smoothies because my kids hate oatmeal, and they don’t even notice it’s there. Mom win.

Can you put raw oats in a smoothie?

Yes! They make a great addition to smoothies. Some find them hard to digest when raw; see my recommendation below.

Do I need to cook oats before putting in a smoothie?

No, you don’t have to. They will blend smooth in your blender, even if they aren’t cooked. If you find raw oats hard to digest, you could soak them overnight and even cook them before adding them to the smoothie, but it’s definitely not necessary if you’re not sensitive to them.

What kind of oats should I use?

Whatever oats you have on hand will work – instant, quick-cooking, or rolled/old-fashioned. However, I wouldn’t recommend using steel-cut oats unless you cook them first. They are less processed, and harder to break down smooth in the blender.

Is this Tropical Oatmeal Smoothie healthy?

Yes! It includes almost all the food groups, from fruit, veggies, grains, healthy fats, and protein if you add a scoop of collagen peptides or protein powder (totally optional). It is the perfect way to start your morning, for a quick and healthy lunch, or a filling snack.

How To Make This Tropical Oatmeal Smoothie:

About The Ingredients:

Fruit: In this recipe, I used a mix of frozen pineapple and mangos, with a fresh banana. You can use a frozen banana as well. The riper the banana, the sweeter it will be.

Oatmeal: Is an amazing and underutilized smoothie ingredient. Since it is packed with fiber, it can help you feel fuller, longer and makes this smoothie nice and thick. You can use quick cooking oats or regular oats. Since they are blended up, it doesn’t really matter what type you use. I usually use quick cooking, because that is what we have on hand.

Coconut milk: you can use a can of full-fat or light coconut milk. The main difference is the amount of fat. Full-fat coconut milk will, obviously, have more fat. You could also use a carton of coconut milk, or a different type of milk. If you use cow’s milk, almond, or cashew milk, it won’t have the delicious coconutty flavor, but will still be really yummy.

Water: use water or more coconut milk. If using more milk, it will add more calories if you are watching your calories. Since I had a can of full-fat coconut milk, I used some water to thin it out a bit.

Honey or maple syrup: I like to add just a touch of honey to my smoothies for some extra sweetness. You can adapt the amount to your liking. To make this smoothie truly vegan, use maple syrup rather than honey.

Kale: I love adding fresh kale or spinach to smoothies for a veggie boost.
